Once a stronghold of Gondor, now a stronghold of the kingdom of Rohan, Helm's Deep was carved into the foothills of the White Mountains, beneath the towering Thrihyrne.

The fortress at Helm's Deep was named after Helm Hammerhand, former king of Rohan, who brought his people to safety during the long winter. Built to endure, the Deep lay in a ravine, flat along the mountainside, and was a place where the people of Rohan could seek refuge for long periods, as was Théoden's plan when he led the Rohirrim there in anticipation of Saruman's attack. The deep wall spanned the valley; a plain of impermeable rock, except for a small culvert at the bottom.

Saruman would send an army of ten thousand Uruk-hai to wipe out the woefully outnumbered Rohirrim, and while Théoden had counted on the stone of the fortress to protect them, he had not counted on the sorcerer's cunning. Ladders and giant ballistae hurled grappling hooks to pull them up against the deep wall, while Uruk-hai armed with explosive devices targeted the small culvert at the wall's base, breaching defenses hitherto deemed impenetrable.

While the fortress was under siege, Éowyn led Rohan's vulnerable to shelter in the glittering caverns of Aglarond, beyond the Deep. Surrounded by glittering crystals and mineral pools, the refugees were forced to face the conflict, not knowing the fate of their kin in the battle or what awaited them; for better or worse.
